Who is Mumia?

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a father, grandfather and husband. He and his supporters have stated that he is innocent of the December 9, 1981, murder of white Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.

The award-winning journalist and former Black Panther, was known for his investigative focus on the police, and his staunch pro-community stances.

He was arrested, convicted and sentenced to death in a trial that has since been exposed for perjured testimony and disputed evidence. Mumia Abu-Jamal became the poster child for America’s Death Row in Pennsylvania, and garnered massive international support which led to his being placed into general population in 2011 along with increased calls for a new trial.

Internationally known as “the voice of the voiceless” Mumia Abu-Jamal has been a prolific writer for all these decades. A

Writing

Mumia is an internationally-recognized award-winning journalist known for his many years spent writing about issues relating to racism in Philadelphia, the murder of local MOVE organization people, people in prison, and more.

Mumia Abu-Jamal has been writing since age 15, first as Minister of Information for the Philadelphia Black Panthers (1969-1971), then for numerous Philadelphia radio and print venues, including National Public Radio. Mumia has written a myriad of articles, commentaries, op-eds, eight books from a prison cell on death row in Pennsylvania.

The movement for Mumia Abu-Jamal is an international network that has taken to the streets for over thirty years to stop two state-sponsored executions, organized to overturn his death sentence, recently sponsored a landmark court case which forced the PA Department of Corrections to administer treatment for his Hepatitis C.
